Model 241 043 Bonanza Garmin 696 Mount

About the day after Garmin announced their new everything-in-one-box 696 GPS, we began to receive requests for mounts to hold it. On this page is our answer.

This new mount is recognizably similar to our original Model 241 020 Bonanza 396/496 Mount and shares many of the same parts. Significantly, our 696 Mount uses the unique Angerole adaptor that clamps to the inspection hole on the back of your yoke bar. This means no drilling and no modifications of any kind to your airplane to fit this mount.

We hope the pictures and graphics on this page will give a clear idea of how the Model 241 043 mount is arranged. Please click on any of the images to download a larger view.

The photo above shows an approximately pilot's eye view of a 696 mounted in Angerole's corporate F33A. Because the shot was taken on the ground and because we're not holding the yoke, the bob weights have taken the yoke to the full-forward down elevator position. Despite this unfavourable position, please note how the only instrument not in absolutely plain view is the slaving indicator under the right side fuel gauge. We promise you that when you're flying and the yoke's in its normal position, the 696 does not block the view of anything on the panel. There's also a nice view on our Gallery page of a 696 on this mount in a V35 Bonanza belonging to one of our customers.

The photos above and below show the Model 241 043 Mount holding a 696 on a Bonanza single yoke. It works just as well on a dual yoke. We would like to draw your attention to the way the GPS is mounted to the right of the yoke, towards the centre of the plane. This is the best place for two reasons: firstly, if you're hand flying, your right hand is free to operate the 696 and secondly, the GPS it's in a position where your co-pilot can see and operate it.

We hope the shots below give an idea of this mount's design and construction. We've designed this mount to bolt to the 4 threaded holes on the back surface of the 696. If you want to take the GPS off to take it home for programming, you only need to undo one bolt. All parts are 6061T6 Aluminum Alloy finished with an aerospace grade gold "alodine" corrosion resistant finish. Alodine looks great on its own or, if you want a different color, it's a really good base for paint.

You have to reach around the back of the 696 to reach the aileron trim knob and, depending on how you adjust this mount, it can be a little tight. But it can be done and, besides, that's the price of having such a nice large GPS. This mount is adjustable in two independent axes for angle and tilt. Once set, it stays where it's put and will not move in turbulence or because of vibration.

We ship all our mounts unassembled so they pack properly in the box. The hardware and the tools to put them together are included along with detailed Installation Notes and this exploded view. Assembly, installation and adjustment will take anyone who's comfortable with simple hand tools maybe 10 minutes.
